In the Future, How Will We Talk to Our Technology?

Image
One of the best scenes from Larry David’s tour-de-neuroses Curb Your Enthusiasm opens with Larry sitting at a restaurant. As cheesy music plays, the camera pans out, revealing the guy at the table next to him. He’s sitting alone, but jabbering loudly, reminding someone we can’t see that “on no planet is a shoe caddy a good gift.” Then comes the reveal: Cut to the other side of this joker’s head, and there’s his Bluetooth headset. Larry, tired of his crap, starts talking loudly to himself. Eventually he fights with the guy next to him, and then they both go back to complaining to the empty chairs in front of them. Jerks. The episode aired in 2007. Mercifully, the “Bluedouche” problem went away for a while after that—it was replaced by people sitting in silence, staring into their screens, which is at least easier to sit next to. Intel executives depart company as mobile, IoT segments struggle for growth. Intel suffers turnover like any company, but its upper echelons aren’t known for being a revolving door. That’s changed in recent weeks with the (unconfirmed) departure of Aicha Evans, who joined the company in July to head its mobile semiconductor division. Now, longtime veterans Kirk Skaugen and Doug Davis are both leaving as well. Skaugen was a senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s client group, while Davis is a senior VP and general manager of the Internet of Things division. Skaugen is leaving immediately, while Davis has pledged to stay on through the end of 2016. These departures all occurred just a few months after Intel hired former Qualcomm executive Dr. Venkata “Murthy” Renduchintala, president of the Client and Internet of Things (IoT) Businesses and Systems Architecture Group. We don’t talk much about Intel’s market position because the company is fundam...

Wireless charging

Wireless charging Place a laptop on a table, and it'll automatically start charging. No wires needed, no need to carry a power brick. That's how Intel views wireless charging for laptops, which could become a reality next year. Intel wants to make wireless chargers as easy to find as a Wi-Fi signal, and wants to bring the technology to cafes, restaurants, airports and other public places so laptops can be recharged without power adapters. The first laptops with wireless charging could come out next year, and Intel has shown a few prototypes laptop being recharged on a table. Mark Hachman Intel plans to make the wire-free future of the PC a reality as early as the first quarter of 2015. Intel is backing the Rezence magnetic resonance wireless charging technology, promoted by the Alliance for Wireless Power, or A4WP. The power flow will initially be limited, enough to wirelessly recharge ultraportables and hybrids. Plans call for increased power output to r...
